Una Bergin

I was trained as a jazz singer and when it comes to what I do and what I am passionate about: music, jazz was my first love. The complexity and the dynamic between melody and chords simply intrigued me. My father taught me my first jazz-standards, while accompanying me on the piano. Then I started singing them, joined jam-sessions and ended up studying music. Now I have my own band with two other singers: Snowapple. It’s not exactly jazz, we write our own songs. The music is a mix of pop, folk, opera and any other style of music we decide to adapt. We travel a lot, especially in the US and England. I love being on tour, traveling, meeting new people and playing music almost everyday.

Event: BIMPOP

Sometimes when I go to a concert I want to be able to sit down, concentrate on the music, closely observe what every individual on stage is doing, hearing only the music, really be inspired with what I hear and see, completely forget about time, work, my phone or any obligations. Up until now I found this was mostly possible when visiting jazz or classical venues, I hardly ever saw pop-music like that. I always had a soft spot for the Bimhuis, Amsterdam’s best jazz venue where since the seventies all the great have performed and still do(Charles Mingus, Jacko Pastorius, John Scofield, Branford Marsalis). The sound is always good, not too loud, very transparent and well taken care of. There is a stunning view of the city-skyline behind the stage and overall the atmosphere is great! I started BIMPOP at the Bimhuis, an evening for adventurous pop music in the broadest sense of the word. Anything is possible, a night with folk or electro even a speed metal band or an afro-beat group. As long as the musicians are skilled and the music is interesting. BIMPOP returns on the 12th of September 2015 with a group around dEUS’ lead singer Tom Barman: Taxiwars.
