Celine van Raamt

After a few years working as a product designer, last year I started Studio Mabelle. In my studio in The Hague, I mainly work on felt lamps and self-made paper products. I studied industrial design at Delft University of Technology. Then for a while I did the Postgraduate programme in Industrial Design at the art school in The Hague. I already drew a lot and created things when I was young, so I knew early on that I wanted to go in a creative direction in college. The foundation of my work is always studying material, shapes, and techniques which result in fun ideas and new designs. After working out my ceramic fruit tree, I found that I truly enjoy not just designing, but also developing products myself.

In my search for material for a lamp, I was looking for something I could work with myself. Material I could process myself without having to make thousands of products because of an expensive process. I saw that felt was perfect for lamps. The sturdy material combined with a handy way of stitching enabled me to make the most interesting shapes. And by way of chance (not even in a conscious search for new materials), I also came upon paper-making. For a project in Jakarta (Ffrash), I worked with street children to made new designs using waste materials. I liked paper-making so much that I decided to do it at home as well. I like seeing where paper comes from. And combined with the stitching, it gets a whole new look and feel.

I already have some future projects and ideas lined up. Next up: porcelain!
