Emmelie Zipson

When I was six I wanted to become a mum and an actress. It did happen, but the other way round. I was brought up with theatre from young age, as my father worked as a theatre director and teacher. Music came later, but I always loved to express myself by creating characters who’d move around, dance and sing. People often ask me what I am; a singer, a musical cabaret act, an actress or a storyteller. I think I’m all and have always found it difficult to choose. I guess I’m an all round-performer with a comic style. I love playing absurd characters who have a story, either by playing or singing. So far I’ve made four solo one-woman shows. Together with pianist and orchestrator Alberto Klein Goldewijk and varying musicians. I’ve performed throughout Holland in theatres and on festivals. To complete my shows I record CD’s. My last one, Bloed Link (Blood Link), is a personal quest for my Russian/East European-Jewish roots. The album has Dutch and international influences. I sing Blues, Jazz, folk and Soul namely in English, but also in Dutch, French, Yiddish and Russian. My voice is clear, warm and enthusiastic, with a noticeable smile.

Living room concerts and new show

The last two years I mainly focused on singing and produced two intimate music programs specifically made for small audiences and spaces, such as living rooms and roof terraces. My last concert ‘Emmelie sings with the two G’s’ consisted of old slavesongs, blues and soul music. Songs about inexhaustable sources like freedom, love, loss and pleasure. Songs that give hope, comfort and bring joy to life. Together with a guitarist and trumpet player we did a small tour and mainly performed at so called Huiskamerconcerten (livingroom concerts). At the moment I’m writing for a new show, inspired by breaking up, dating, sex and human behaviour in general. Next to that I work as a chairman, presenter and voice-over for several companies such as Philips, ABN AMRO, Ahoy and more.
